In one centerโ€™s review of 397 consecutive cardiac surgery patients, about 70% showed symptoms of post-intensive care syndrome one month after surgery. Most had never heard the term.Last monthโ€™s ERAS Cardiac Monthly Multidisciplinary Meeting featured Sarah Holler, MSN, MS, RN, CCRN, presenting on post-intensive care syndrome (PICS), the collection of cognitive, behavioral, and physical symptoms that can follow a critical illness or ICU stay.Key themes from the session:- PICS affects up to 80% of ICU survivors, and about 25% of those affected develop PTSD- PICS is frequently misdiagnosed as anxiety or depression, and there is currently no ICD-10 code- Prevention strategies mirror ERAS principles: early mobility, multimodal pain management, minimized sedation, and family engagementSurvival is no longer enough. Recovery is the outcome.Recording link in bio. Resources to share with patients and families are in the comments. #ERASCardiac #CardiacSurgery #PICS #EnhancedRecovery

Postoperative atrial fibrillation is the most frequent complication after cardiac surgery, tied to greater morbidity, mortality, length of stay, and cost. Yet practice variation persists. The Society of Thoracic Surgeons 2026 Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Prevention and Treatment of New-Onset Postoperative Atrial Fibrillation After Cardiac Surgery, published in The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, offer the most comprehensive recommendations to date focused specifically on POAF after cardiac surgery.Key elements:- 15 recommendations spanning preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative care- Class I for perioperative oral amiodarone and cardioversion for hemodynamically unstable POAF- Class IIa support for posterior pericardiotomy and perioperative beta-blockers- A framework to standardize care and flag future research prioritiesProud to see ERAS Cardiac Executive Board Members Subhasis Chatterjee, MD and Michael Grant, MD, MSE and Advisory Board Members Charles Mack, MD and Moritz Wyler von Ballmoos, MD, PhD among the authors.Full guidelines at the link in our bio.#ERASCardiac #CardiacSurgery #POAF #AtrialFibrillation

Module 4 of the ERAS Cardiac micro-learning series is now available on Ethos: CSA-AKI Prevention and Management: An Integrated ERAS Approach.Cardiac surgery-associated acute kidney injury is one of the most common and preventable complications after cardiac surgery. Because creatinine is a lagging indicator, it is often caught late. This module presents an integrated ERAS approach for earlier recognition and prevention across the full perioperative journey.Inside the module:- Why serum creatinine alone misses early injury- How the ABCD framework flags high-risk patients before surgery- How goal-directed perfusion and a KDIGO prevention bundle reduce renal injuryAlready enrolled? Log in to Ethos and itโ€™s ready in your dashboard. New to the series? Link in bio to learn more and get access.Module developed with subject matter expertise from Daniel Engelman, MD, Medical Director, Cardiac Surgical Critical Care & Inpatient Services, Baystate Health#ERASCardiac #CardiacSurgery #AKI #ClinicalEducation #microlearning
